Engineering Sixth Form

The Engineering Education Scheme is an initiative that brings together schools and industrial companies so that ‘would be engineers’, or students that wish to sample this avenue of employment, can work on substantial projects, whilst receiving support from a working engineer.

On Friday, 21st March, two sixth form teams attended the EESW awards and presentation day at Swansea University. This year, St John’s was paired with the NHS, focusing on Built Environment. This year’s project required the students to re-design or design a brand new sustainable hospital. When doing this, there were a number of prerequisites that had to be met in order for the proposal to be cost effective, sustainable, and successful.

The brief:

Your local hospital needs replacing - it is of dated construction and costs a lot of money to maintain, its sustainability needs improving and it needs to cater for developing a new radiology department.

It needs to be in a centrally located site to serve the patients of the Health Board locality and the hospital cannot close to patients during construction.

You may either refurbish and improve the current building, or design a replacement building from scratch.

The teams worked and presented incredibly well - they should be very proud of all the hard work they put into completing this prestigious challenge.
