Sixth Form Educational Visit

On Friday January 20th, our A Level Welsh students were fortunate enough to be invited to a revision day organised by Cardiff University at their School of Welsh.

Students were greeted by university staff, before attending an array of lectures and workshops, tailored to the WJEC AS and A Level specifications. Our Lower Sixth students spent the morning taking part in a poetry workshop, analysing and discussing two of the poems that may appear in this summer’s examination, whilst also learning more about the history of the Welsh settlers who arrived in Patagonia in the mid-1800s. Students then discussed the film ‘Patagonia’, studied in Lower Sixth. This proved to be an invaluable experience for our students, especially after meeting the stars of the film at a special cinema screening in September.

The morning was also rather exciting for our students in the Upper Sixth, as they took part in a workshop on the drama studied at A Level, ‘Crash’, where they even met the playwright, Sera Moore Williams! Students were able to ask her questions about the drama which will again prove invaluable during their final speaking examinations to be held in the spring. Before lunch, the students also attended a lecture on the Welsh language in society, focusing on the history of the language whilst also looking at the importance of the language in the present day.

In the afternoon, our Lower Sixth students attended a grammar workshop, with many interactive elements, putting our students’ knowledge to the test; whilst our Upper Sixth students attended a lecture on the short stories studied at A Level.

All students had a great day, not only revising various elements of the course and practising their skills outside the classroom, but also experiencing a day in the life of a typical undergraduate at Cardiff University, as well as having the opportunity to network and meet other students from South East Wales also studying Welsh at A Level.

Diolch, Ysgol y Gymraeg ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd am drefnu diwrnod anhygoel!

Mrs George

Welsh Subject Coordinator
