Music Educational Visit

The St John’s College Concert Orchestra and Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral Choir have returned from a highly successful mini-tour to Dorset and Somerset, where they showcased their exceptional musical talents and collaborative spirit.

Over the course of two unforgettable days, our pupils demonstrated outstanding musicianship, professionalism, and enthusiasm. The tour included a stay at Mendip Lodge Activity Centre and culminated in a spectacular joint concert with Leweston School, Sherborne.

The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the concert at Leweston School, where the Concert Orchestra and Cathedral Choir delivered breathtaking performances. Their music was met with high praise from members of Leweston School, the Leweston Choral Society, Schola Cantorum, local community ensembles, and the public, who were captivated by their talent and artistry.

Under the expert direction of Mr Howard, the orchestra performed a diverse programme, including Johann Strauss’ Unter Donner und Blitz Polka, If I Loved You from Carousel, and the theme from Miss Marple. The choir impressed with stunning renditions of O Nata Lux and Richard Farrant’s Lord, for Thy Tender Mercy’s Sake.

The true spirit of the tour shone through in two powerful collaborative performances: Parry’s I Was Glad and a rousing finale of the gospel favourite Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit, leaving both performers and audience uplifted.

Beyond the concert hall, the tour was filled with camaraderie and memorable moments. Mrs Lawrie kept spirits high on the coach journey back to Mendip Lodge, even treating pupils to a performance of the Wannabe rap! Despite a late night and an early start, pupils made the most of their time in the Mendip countryside, enjoying tobogganing and frisbee golf in glorious spring weather.

A huge thank you goes to Mr Howard, Mrs Lawrie, Mr Taylor, and Mrs Gillespie, without whom this incredible experience would not have been possible.

Throughout the tour, our pupils were exemplary in both conduct and musicianship, acting as true ambassadors for St John’s College. Their dedication, talent, and enthusiasm made this trip an unforgettable experience, and we cannot wait to share our music across the UK—and beyond—in the near future!
