On Wednesday, 13th March, the R10s had a fantastic day at The Royal Mint.
To begin the day, R10 became investigators and learnt how to use lots of different techniques and equipment to gather evidence to decide whether a £2 coin was a forgery or real - all of the children were keen to catch the culprits! During the morning the children were also fully engaged in learning about the history of The Royal Mint and especially loved learning that Sir Isaac Newton was once the Master of the Mint!
After lunch, the children were then taken on an extremely interesting tour of The Royal Mint factory where they saw coins from lots of countries being made and saw the ‘minting’ process in action. The day culminated in each of the children striking their own 50p coin to take home as a keepsake - it was very interesting to learn about the process of changing the coins to now represent King Charles.
One of the most interesting parts of the day was learning that at The Royal Mint there is a small plot of land owned by the Treasury which stored £100 million pounds worth of coins! For those quiz heads amongst us, here is your challenge…how did The Royal Mint end up locating to Llantrisant? Sometimes it is about who you know…
Each of the pupils was a delight to take on the trip and we had many Royal Mint staff compliment their behaviour - well done, R10.
