As R7 pupils prepare for their transition from Infant to Junior School, Izaac, Myra, and Tanisha from R11 took on the important role of mentors, sharing their experiences of life in the Junior School. The writing task assigned to the R11 group provided an opportunity for them to ‘write with a purpose’ and for them to then share their valuable insights and experiences with the younger pupils. The R7 children also had the opportunity to ask questions they had about life in the Juniors and the R11s responded with personal insights and helpful advice.
In preparation for this, Izaac, Myra and Tanisha reflected on their time in Junior School and wrote thoughtful accounts of their experiences. During their presentations, R7 listened attentively and our R11 group answered their questions with honesty and enthusiasm. R7 were eager to learn about everything from expectations in the classroom to subjects like science, languages and art, plus whether the teachers are strict! The R11 group reassured them that while moving up to the Junior school may seem daunting at first, it is a place filled with support, fun, and opportunities to grow.
They went on to speak about the exciting lessons they had enjoyed, the new responsibilities they had embraced and the many co-curricular activities that were on offer. Highlighting their particular favourites, from school trips to sporting events, learning new subjects, to developing independence, their reflections painted a vivid picture of the challenges and rewards of life as a St John's Junior School pupil.
The event was a fantastic success, helping to build confidence and excitement for our R7 pupils, as they prepare for the next step in their educational journey. A big ‘well done’ to Isaac, Myra and Tanisha for their insightful presentations and for being such excellent role models!
