The school was buzzing with the “love of F1iS” on Tuesday 14th February as our Entry class teams took over the sports hall to present their teams and race their cars at our “In House” competition.

Throughout the whole of the Advent term, our R12 pupils have spent their DT lessons working in teams to compete at the F1 in Schools Entry class competition and to vie for a chance to represent SJC at the Regional competition. Who would follow in the footsteps of Blackout and our current World class team, Firestorm?

The day started with teams completing their Pit Displays and presenting their cars for scrutineering to our F1 Alumni.

As we all assembled, and the excitement grew, Mr Steve Lane from EESW and Mr Moody started the afternoon of racing. They spent time explaining what would happen as the cars were attached to the track and gas canisters pierced. 

Firestorm had created a spreadsheet for racing that allowed the teams to see their fastest times and the current winners on the big screen as the afternoon progressed. Tensions were high as the racing drew to an end and our Dev and Pro teams got a chance to test their cars for Regionals.

Our SJC Alumni and Mr Moody were in position as the time came to announce the winners of each category. Lilia from Red Dawn and Adam from Blackout had been our commentators for the afternoon and quickly swapped their roles to join their teams to help present the trophies. Not only were there “real gold plastic” cups but handmade trophies from elements of team Firestorm's car for the winners to keep. Our future star awards were chosen by our Pro teams and were awarded to pupils the teams felt had the potential to be the next superstars of F1 at SJC! Congratulations to Jack and Dylan who really did embrace the engineering side of the tasks. The fastest car of the tournament was from Thunderstorm and the fastest car in knockouts was Friction Fire.

As you can see from our awards chart the teams' points were very close and although it had never happened before teams were awarded joint third and second places. Our overall and thoroughly well deserved winners and representing SJC at the South Wales Regionals are . . . TEAM PREDATOR!
