On Thursday 20th February, following our pre-Eisteddfod fortnight filled with an array of subject competitions, from Geography quizzes to Spanish music videos, all pupils in R12-R14 gathered in the hall for a morning to celebrate Welsh culture and heritage with our annual Senior Eisteddfod. After competing in preliminary rounds in the weeks leading up to the big day, pupils competed in a variety of stage competitions, including traditional Welsh recitations and musical performances
We began our morning with a full hall of pupils singing ‘Sosban Fach’ at the top of their voices for the first competition of the day - the R12-R14 House Choir Competition. St Davids took the lead in 1st place, followed by Bute, Mostyn and De La Salle. In the R12 Welsh Group Recitation Competition, Mostyn secured the top spot with plenty of expression and almost perfect pronunciation.
Notable individual winners were Gabriel P from St David’s in the R13 Welsh Individual Recitation Competition, followed by Daisy S of Mostyn and Rishit D of De La Salle in second and third places respectively. In the R12 instrumental competitions, Alice G of Bute earned first prize, followed by James C of Mostyn, Safiye B of St David’s and Daksh Chopra of De La Salle. In the second of the musical competitions, Jayden Q of De La Salle earned first prize, followed by Millie P of St David’s, Queenie W, also of St David’s and Ava J and Siddarth S, both of De La Salle. The winning R14 pianists were Emily T and Linsey Z, both of Bute, earning first and second prizes respectively.
Congratulations to our top point scorers from each house - Linsey Z of Bute, Adam S of De La Salle, Hannah N of Mostyn and Howie L of St David’s, but our overall top point scorer and crowned bard of the 2025 St John’s College Senior Eisteddfod was James C of Mostyn! Congratulations to everyone!
This year, our winning senior school house was Bute, with a staggering 1395 points! Llongyfarchiadau!
We concluded this year’s senior Eisteddfod with an extra-special touch; the awarding of our coveted St John’s house colours. House colours are awarded for a combination of excellent co-curricular contributions, both in and out of school, and for outstanding conduct around the school. It was a pleasure to award Linsey Z, Siddarth S, Aryav K and Howie L with their house colours on this very special day.
Mrs George would like to thank all the staff for their support in running numerous competitions, especially Mr Howard for accompanying the musical items so effortlessly, and Miss Prosser for her thorough judging of the Welsh competitions. Finally, Mrs George would like to send an enormous thank you to Miss Sanders, Miss Cooper and Mrs Crowley-Davies as her fellow Heads of House for all the hard work in planning the event, and to Mr Taylor for facilitating a wonderful morning of house comradery. However, the biggest thank you of all goes to the pupils for their enthusiasm and representing their houses perfectly.
