During one of our R8 History home learning lessons, we met Soldier Rufus from Caerleon who set us a challenge.

We would learn about the Romans and how to become a Roman Soldier.  We started with a ‘Practice Bootcamp’ with Centurion Valerius where we learnt to march using Latin terms such as ‘Intente’ and ‘Laxarte’.  Next, we learnt about the barracks room and the armour and weapons that Roman soldiers used.  We even made our own Roman shields! We also found out about the Roman legacy – did you know that the Romans introduced firefighters, rabbits and the calendar?

After our preparation, we were ready to meet with our Centurion from Caerleon! Unfortunately, we couldn’t visit the museum but were able to see a lot of relics online.  We were all able to join the army as nobody from R8 is married yet.  We passed the test and all became soldiers of the legion.  A fantastic virtual trip that will really help us as we learn more about the Romans this term!
